DRM is Filthy: Why Musicians Will Hate Windows 7

Posted in Anger, Music, Sad, Stupid, Technology on February 17, 2009 by dublab

When the beta version of Windows 7 dropped recently, nerds around the world were heard gasping in relief.  Finally, a version of Vista that works.  With features that people want.  I heard all about its improved ease of use, the marvelously easy installation process, the almost-like-magic identification of drivers for nearly every piece of hardware under the sun and the fantastic dock-like task bar.  For about 2 and a half weeks there, I REALLY WANTED to get Window 7 as soon as it came out.

But today we get the news.  Windows 7 is riddled with filthy, dirty DRM.  Specifically, a Slashdot reader recently discovered that capturing audio playing on a Windows 7 machine with said PC’s own sound card is pretty much impossible – by design.  If the sound card is playing audio, its inputs are disabled by the OS.  As if that weren’t enough, the OS seems to be very protective over the modification of installed software – this is where it gets much scarier:

Re — Photoshop: That Photoshop stopped functioning after we messed with one of its nag DLLs was not so much a surprise, but what was a surprise: Noting that Win7 allows programs like Photoshop to insert themselves stealthily into your firewall exception list. Further, that the OS allows large software vendors to penetrate your machine. Even further, that that permission is responsible for disabling of a program based on a modified DLL. And then finding that the OS even after reboot has locked you out of your own Local Settings folder; has denied you permission to move or delete the modified DLL; and refuses to allow the replacement of the Local Settings folder after it is unlocked with Unlocker to move it to the Desktop for examination (where it also denies you entry to your own folder). Setting permissions to ‘allow everyone’ was disabled!

This is disappointing news to many, including myself.  As a musician, I use the computer as a tool to make my work easier, and from that perspective, this is kind of like seeing someone try to market a paint brush without bristles – totally unacceptable, and not something that I would EVER spend money on.

So, to Microsoft: take this crap out of the operating system and I may consider purchasing Windows 7 when it comes out.  If you leave it in, I will need to continue using my XP machine until 2016 when you put out your next OS.

Sexting and America’s Moral Bankruptcy

Posted in Anger, Politics, Random, Sad on February 17, 2009 by dublab

Here’s some bullshit:  these 13-yr-old kids got caught sending pictures of their nude classmates amongst themselves from cell phone to cell phone – so the Falmouth Police Department (508 457-2527) is planning to charge them with felony child porn charges.  I’ve included the phone number so that you can call and complain – their website is dead.

CNN Video

Now when I first heard about this story, it was on a CNN video that featured some woman saying that they were planning to ruin these kids’ lives by charging them with possession and distribution of child pornography – because although the charges are probably not applicable, they wanted to “send the message that this is not acceptable behavior.”

That’s fucked up. That’s like if we decided to go ahead and take all underage kids that have sex with their peers and charge them with statuatory rape to send the message that “that is not acceptable behavior.”  Why don’t we make them all pin special patches on their shirts too?

Here’s another question – why isn’t the girl getting charged with producing child porn?  That just sends the message that girls should be loose and irresponsible and there will be no repercussions, and that the boys better stay away from nude pictures or they will be branded as child pornographers.  Clearly this isn’t about sending a message about what is or isn’t acceptable behavior – it is about perpetuating America’s puritanical right-wing positions around the ever-touchy subject of teenagers exploring human sexuality.  What these kids need is a responsible dialogue on human sexuality and the consequences of their actions, not to have their lives ruined by being convicted of producing and distributing child pornography.

America:  kids sending text messages with naked pictures of themselves is regrettable – but convicting teenagers on child porn charges just for acting like teenagers shows just how morally bankrupt this country is.   Ruining a child’s life just to send a puritanical message of repression is just PLAIN WRONG.

He dicho.

Kroger – Right Store… For Junk Mail

Posted in Anger on January 6, 2009 by dublab

Hi! It’s been a while since I’ve written anything. Unfortunately, today’s post isn’t all that I wish it could be.

I have decided that this venue is a perfect place to chronicle my battle against junk mail. Although it might not be the most exciting reading, at least you can hear about what happens when you try to stop junk mail from coming to your house.

kroger

Today I received not one, but two “shoppers” from Kroger, and since I hate these, I immediately called the number on the front of the mailer, and a delightful young woman picked up wanting to tell me about the Kroger generic medication program.  Her delightfulness quickly evaporated when I asked to be removed from her mailing list.  “I wonder how that happens…” she said. “Let me make sure I am transferring you to the right department.”

Then she put me on hold.

5 minutes later someone with Kroger Customer Service picked up the phone. When I asked for her to take me off the mailing list, she asked for my zip code and name, then she asked if I had my Kroger Plus card with me. After telling her I didn’t HAVE a Kroger Plus card and that the mail was addressed to “Resident,” she tried to pull it up using my address. Still nothing.

“It must’ve been sent from another division. I’ll send it to them for them to take care of it.” Then she assured me that I would be taken off the list when I asked again.

Tasha promised – I would hold her to it but she couldn’t give me an extension that she could be reached at.  Kroger (“Right Store Right Price”) – if you’re reading – stop it!

Hearst Magazines Sucks

I didn’t renew my subscription and now they sent me the following letter:

“Your delinquent account with us has been brought to our attention for collection. ‘Subscription Suspended for Non Payment’, that’s what our records reflect.”

If I’m not mistaken, this could be classified as bullying… well fuck em, I’m not the first one to think this was messed up. I’m never purchasing another issue of Esquire, Popular Mechanics or SmartMoney ever again.

Start Your Conspiracy Engines…

If anything can convince me that election cancellations are possible (as pointed out by DJ Eurok), it would be this BoingBoing post which suggests that congresspeople were told that not passing the bailout bill would force the government to impose martial law.  Some people would call that coercion.

Clearly there are dark forces at work, and they are fully capable of getting a bill passed by Congress.  If our government is really convinced that the constituency is about to start rioting and that this nation’s way of life is about to descend into anarchy, is it really that far-fetched that they might try to cancel the elections?

State of Georgia’s Voicemail Box Is Full When It Comes To An Innocent Man’s Execution

Posted in Anger, Atlanta, Karma, Police State, Sad on September 22, 2008 by dublab

Troy Davis is scheduled to die tomorrow – he will be executed by the State of Georgia for a murder that he claims he did not commit – no murder weapon was ever found.  Proving that the State of Georgia doesn’t care about reasonable doubt, they scheduled his execution 6 days before Troy’s Supreme Court appeal date.  I wrote the Georgia Parole Board about this recently, however this afternoon I received an e-mail with a direct phone number and thought I would call instead:

Subject: Innocent man to die tomorrow – please help and forward to all who can!

Guys I’m sorry to send out a mass message but this is really important to me. All it takes is a minute to tell the state of Georgia you oppose the execution of an INNOCENT man. For a quick summary of the case, see www.savetroydavis.net. I just called today and it was easy and painless. Here is the message from one of my fellow Amnesty International activists:

Troy’s execution date has been set for Tuesday, but there is still something you can do!

Please call 404-651-6671…
It is the direct line to the Georgia Parole Board.
You will get a live person. They will ask your name and the state you are from.
Please tell them you OPPOSE the scheduled execution of Troy–on Tuesday.

The line does not go to a live person.  It goes to voicemail.  And the mailbox is full – can’t leave any more messages.  So I say it again, the state of Georgia doesn’t give a crap about reasonable doubt.

Regardless, I will continue to call – please call too.  It could happen to you.

Update: The Supreme Court granted Troy a stay of execution 2 hours before he was scheduled to die.  Way to go, State of Georgia – epic fail.
