Something Old, Something New…

Something New:

Up until a few weeks ago, I didn’t really know what dubstep was, even though I know what dub is. FYI, dubstep is a sub-genre of electronic music that is pretty big in Britain lately, supposedly some kind of bastard child between garage, dub and two-step. I discovered the genre since that is what recent music-blog darling Burial classifies his (her?) music as. Looking up Burial on the Hype Machine led me to a post on the dubstep movement and how badass it is, which also happened to include a link to the song Windfall by Boxcutter.

After listening to some Burial songs, I was suprised… rather than the creepy synths and glitchy minimalistic two-step beats, Windfall is more reminiscent of the traditional dub production style you’d expect from someone like, say… the Mad Professor. While there is no arguing the dubstep classification, it sounds like beautiful dub to my ears… organ bubble, deep bass, triplet delay repeats, and bubbly synth lead sounds.

The rest of the album, titled Glyphic, is more in tune with what you would expect from the genre, but is still completely and totally fantastic and highly enjoyable. Many thumbs up. Go buy it.

Something Old:

Recently I’ve been listening to an older song by Ray Barreto, Indestructible, off his record by the same title. It’s all about overcoming adversity and betrayal and discovering your inner toughness. And pretty much being a badass. I recommend. The rest of the album is excellent as well.

That is all.
