The Most Badass Blogger I Know, Robots, and Other Recent Developments

Yoani Sánchez (picture above) is one of the most badass people I know. A native of Havana, Yoani regularly blogs about life in Cuba and somehow escapes government attention (although her blog has recently been blocked in Cuba). I can’t really say much about Yoani other than she is extremely inspiring and her stories about buying black market lemons and cow slaughter by locomotive make me infinitely grateful for everything that is good about life in a non-communist country.
Clicking on the picture of the Union Jack on her page will bring up Yoani’s English translation of her work. Unfortunately, it seems to happen slowly and in no particular order, so I would recommend you learn Spanish if you want to stay current with her newest posts.
Some other things that have been on my mind today:
- Techdirt published a little post today that made realize exactly why the United States patent system is screwed. His comment about what Thomas Jefferson would’ve wanted really drove it home for me.
- Earlier today I was involved in somewhat of an argument regarding the use of the Comic Sans typeface by technical writers. I won’t go into it much other than saying that Comic Sans should never be used for anything that is not intended for use in a elementary school classroom. Not only has it been totally beat to death, it is lame and unprofessional. Do you see any graphic design professionals using it for logos or website design? NO! That’s why you shouldn’t either.
- Robots. A while ago a coworker was telling me about how his wife’s baby shower is coming up soon and how it is going to be robot-themed, since that is the motif they have picked for room decorations for the kid. I couldn’t help thinking about all the cool robot-related things I’ve read about lately (mostly on Boing Boing):
